Description by Christopher Megowan Design
On this renovation to an Artwork Deco house within the leafy Melbourne suburb of Caulfield, the interiors of the prevailing home have been reordered to create a brand new central backbone which culminates by framing a view of an present and prolific cumquat tree on the rear of the property.
Key to the success of this design was the creation of two outside rooms which straddle the dwelling and eating areas of the house. To the east, a decked “room” has been designed to not solely permit northern mild into the rear extension but in addition rework into an outside cinema by way of the intelligent integration of a double-sided projector display within the window opening of the interior residence theatre. To the west, a second and bigger outside “room” connects to the dwelling areas by way of a big bifold door and double sided indoor/outside hearth.
A considerable polished concrete island bench anchors the kitchen to the dwelling areas, serving as a transition level between the 2 outside areas. The play on room interfaces is sustained between the kitchen and rear butler’s pantry with a retractable glass splashback offering an environment friendly technique of screening the service space.
The heaviness of the island bench is balanced by raised ceilings and steady clerestory home windows to the north, east and west which permit ample northern mild deep into the dwelling areas all through the day. Further options embrace giant pocketing sliders all through the home which permit the dwelling to be zoned for each flexibility of use and heating and cooling.
The Artwork Deco affect of the unique house is referenced within the “toothed” brick driveway and paving, with orange-hued timber accents drawing a connection to the unique terracotta and brick accents each in and out. The color of the price efficient, but hanging sheet metallic cladding on the rear is referenced within the guttering and spouting of the unique house on the entrance. These palette references permit for a dialogue to exist between previous and new and finally permit the renovations to sew into the unique construction in a up to date but complementary method.
